Valentine's Day

The main genre convention that goes along with Valentine’s Day is that it has to be about love. In actuality, Valentine’s Day was created to honor agriculture and food, not love. When I think about Valentine’s Day, I often think about going out to a nice dinner or chocolate, maybe even seeing a movie as for things to do. The people that are generally honored during this holiday are significant others, family, and friends. In Pop Culture, the only thing I can really think of is the satirical movie released in 2010 entitled Valentine’s Day. It hosts a range of different plot lines and as you watch the movie, the progression of the plot shows how they either connect or are similar enough to connect. This film subverts and fulfills the genre conventions of Valentine’s Day. For example, some of the couples in the film aim to do the traditional dinner date and the man gives the woman chocolates and flowers, while other characters are anti-Valentine’s and are alone for the holiday. It’s interesting to see how some things work out in the movie because, in the end, the day of love turned one woman into a divorced mess and another into the happiest bride to be. I guess Valentine’s Day can have many different effects on people, just as any other holiday can.
